This sculpture continues my Thumb series, exploring the struggles and relationships that shape human life.

Two figures climb a giant thumb: a woman above and a man below. At first, the scene appears to show cooperation—the man seems to support and push the woman upward toward their shared goal. But as you look more closely, the relationship becomes more complicated.

The man is not actually climbing the thumb himself. Instead, he holds onto the woman’s foot, depending on her strength as she rises. The higher she climbs, the greater the burden she carries. This creates a question: Are they helping each other reach the top, or is one person preventing the other from moving forward?

The sculpture reflects the uncertainty of human relationships. We all have dreams and ambitions, but our journeys are rarely completely independent. The people closest to us can become our greatest support, but they can also become responsibilities we must carry.

The figures’ male and female identities add another layer of meaning. The woman is positioned at the highest point, suggesting strength and achievement, while also carrying the weight of another person’s dependence. This creates a reflection on partnership, expectation, and the balance between support and limitation.

Like other works in the Thumb series, the oversized hand represents the larger world we are trying to navigate. We are all small figures attempting to find our way, hoping that trust and compassion will help us rise rather than pull each other down.

In the end, the sculpture leaves us with an unanswered question: When we reach the top, who will we bring with us—and what will we have to carry along the way?
