HUMAN BURDEN -The Weight

Artist: Yin Peet

Size: 28″Hx8″Wx9″D

Weight: 600lb

Material: Granite

Year completed: 2015

The Weight began as one of the tiny soft stone carvings in Yin’s Chinese Burden series. In that original sculpture, a geometric shape was held up by the figures’s ten fingertips.

Years later, when Yin enlarged the idea into granite, something unexpected happened. The weight of the geometric shape became so heavy that the ten fingertips could no longer support it. The sculpture itself forced Yin to change the design. She, then, bend the figure’s legs so the knees could help carry the weight.

This structural solution became the heart of the sculpture.

The geometric block has no specific identity. It may represent responsibility, grief, fear, expectation, or any challenge that feels too heavy to bear.

Throughout Yin’s work, the oversized hand represents human effort and hope. Here it does not conquer the burden. It simply refuses to let it fall, because if it falls, it falls on herself.

The Weight is Yin’s quiet decision to keep carrying what life has placed upon her.
